تدور أحداث هذا الأنمي عن أذكى شاب في اليابان(Light Yagami) والذي يريد أن يجعل العالم مكاناً أحسن بدون مجرمين ولا قتله ... ويصادف ذلك أنه قام بإيجاد كتاب قبض الأرواح و الذي يكون مفعوله بعد أربعين ثانية من كتابة الإسم بسكته قلبيه .. أما إذا كتبت طريقة موت الشخص المراد موته فإنه يموت فور كتابة الطريقة و قبل انتهاء الأربعين ثانية... على العموم ... يصادف أيضاً أن الكتاب هذا يرجع إلى الشينيجمي (قابض الأرواح أو بالياباني إله الموت)والذي يدعى Ryuuku والذي قام بإلقاء الكتاب في الأرض حتى يتم العثور عليه من قبل أي شخص وذلك فقط للتسلية ... لأنه يريد أ، يرى كيف سيتصرف صاحب الكتاب الجديد
